Home Theft Protection Tips
No home is free from the risk of theft. It is imperative to take precautions and avoid the temptation to become complacent. When we let our guards down, we increase the risk of theft.
Criminals tend to strike during daytime hours when most adults are at work and kids are at school. Most burglars are opportunistic and appear inconspicuous. It is important to stay vigilant and aware of the people and vehicles in your neighborhood.
Take proactive steps to protect your home.
Always lock all doors, windows (including in the basement), and garage doors, even if you are leaving for just a few minutes. Lock pet doors.
Replace worn keypad entry devices and regularly change the access code. Extensive use may allow the number combination to become visible.
Store keys in a secure location. Instead of putting spare keys in easy-to-find spots around your home, opt to leave keys with a trusted neighbor or in a key lockbox. If you park your car outside, do not leave any garage remote openers and housekeys in your vehicle.
Consider installing a home security system and video monitors. Many systems now offer ways to control and monitor via a smartphone app when you are not home.
Install motion sensor lighting around your property and garage. Keep the exterior well-lit. Thieves may choose to avoid a well-lit home. In your home, place lights on timers set for different times in different rooms, making it more challenging for criminals to know when you are away.
Keep trees and shrubs trimmed. Do not allow them to block doors or windows, giving thieves a place to hide. Keep ladders or other items thieves could use to gain entry locked in a garage or shed.
Close curtains or blinds to prevent criminals from seeing your home’s layout and taking inventory of your belongings. Keep valuables out of sight and away from doors or windows. Keep all personal and financial information in a locked, fire proof safe stored in a secure location.
